My journey to nutrition
My name is Jodie Woodward and I never really thought much about nutrition until I had my first child.
Embarking on starting solids with him was confusing and frustrating. I was getting so much conflicting advice. Start him at 4 months, wait until 6 months, feed rice cereal only at first, don’t ever use rice cereal…I was so confused. As a natural learner and a real bookworm, I read everything I could find. Of course, by the time I finished that we were already well into our feeding journey. My son couldn’t wait.
I became interested in my own Nutrition then too. As a breastfeeding mother, I was tired and run-down and I wanted to make sure I was fuelling my body correctly. I had no idea what I should be eating, if gluten really was evil, or if I should be reaching for full-fat or low-fat milk. I’m sure you’ve felt that way too. I was tired of the confusing information travelling around on Facebook about health and nutrition and was determined to get to the bottom of things.
Not one to mess around, I decided I would complete some more official study. Not only would that give me some useful knowledge from a reliable source but also would help increase my job prospects at the end. I enrolled in a Masters of Human Nutrition through Deakin University so that I could study online while also caring for my two children.
It was a long 3 ½ years of part-time study to reach completion but I really treasured my new-found knowledge. While I was studying I fuelled my body through training and completion of a half-marathon. I introduced solids to my second child in a such a different and more well-informed way. Boy, is he a better eater now because of it! I also started meal planning to make grocery shopping easier and so I didn’t have to stress about what was for dinner each night. The daily ritual of packing lunchboxes started and I knew straight away what to include in them.
Once my studies were complete I knew I wanted a job that could be flexible around my family and where I could really make a difference in people’s lives. I decided to start my own business, where I could work from home and around the needs of my clients. I know you’re all busy with commitments of your own too.
