A few months ago we welcomed three lovely ladies into our family - Ramona, Hermione and Rosa. It's been a fun journey getting to know our new little friends and ensuring they settle into their new homes. The kids have taught them to eat from their hands and they love eating lettuce and silverbeet from the vegetable garden that we pick especially for them. They come running when they see us now, always wanting to know if we have food for them.
Of course, the best part of keeping chickens is the fresh eggs. Our chickens have just started laying about three weeks ago and we are already in love with our free range supply of eggs. They taste so much better than store-bought eggs and collecting them each day is a lovely ritual for us all.
The other excellent benefit of having chickens as pets is that we can feed them our food scraps. As well as eating their special chicken food, they are also treated to our leftover vegetable peels, leafy castoffs and whatever else the children have discarded. We throw less food into the bin and they reward us with delicious eggs. It's a win-win!
We're very much loving our journey into chicken keeping so far. They make excellent pets, and although they can be bit messy, they're definitely worth it.
